AFRIKAN AFFIRMATIONS

“The eternal theme – of a victim who hollers from the depths of a pit for the tyrant to lower a ladder for him – just won’t do. We still have to make the transition in our minds, from the status of bleeding victim to that of the proactive initiator who knows what changes he wants.”
Es’kia Mphahlele – 1993

Professor Es’kia Mphahlele passed away on Monday 27 October 2008. Mphahlele was born on 17 December 1919. Uncle Zeke, as he was affectionately known, passed on the eve of the 6th Anniversary of The Es’kia Institute. On 29 October 2002, in a celebration marked under the banner headline GATHER AFRIKANS GATHER, the launch of The Es’kia Institute inspired the imagination of South Afrikans and others from further afield. The Board of Trustees of The Es’kia Institute, in mourning the death of Professor Mphahlele regret that he passed prior to the erection of the proto-type structure - The Es’kia Institute. In September 2004 Prof Mphahlele wrote: “We need always project our vision to the day when The Es’kia Institute will be a bigger phenomenon than our individual selves” The Trustees of The Es’kia Institute hold this affirmation as the basis of a more determined resolve to build The Es’kia Institute – inspired by the life and work of Es’kia Mphahlele.
