The Es’kia Institute was established as a Trust in 2002. It is registered in terms of the Non-Profit Organisations Act of 1997 and is governed by a Board of Trustees. The establishment of the Institute was inspired by the life and work of Professor Es’kia Mphahlele. The Board of Trustees held its inaugural meeting on 27 October 2002. One of the first conclusions of the board was that creating a heightened awareness around Mphahlele and The Es’kia Institute was strategically key to advancing any future programme of action. The Board also agreed that, at this early stage, projects within the Institute should run parallel with initiatives begun prior to the establishment of the Es’kia Institute. The advantage of this approach was that it allowed the Institute to capitalize on the impetus of existing efforts to enhance the profile of Prof Es’kia Mphahlele. Institute Trustees: Lindiwe Morrison (Chairperson), Brenda Tyala, Ferdinand Mabalane, Mike Stainbank, Mothupi Radingoana and Syriana Maesela “. . .we must also try to find a common focus that will inform our efforts around the division of the Institute's work that best translates into group participation and creativity: the arts. I am also keen that the activities that are often neglected under the rubrique of "arts", viz literature and other intellectual pursuits, should be consciously nurtured in the Es'kia Institute. It is precisely because in them individual creativity, rather than group sponsorship and applause, is fiercely celebrated even without mass participation or even awareness. Let's one day prove that literary and other intellectual products can indeed represent a people's voice, inasmuch as they are rooted in social attributes, deriving their right to exist from the very soil and nourishment we call the human drama. We need always to project our vision to the day when the Es'kia Institute will be a bigger phenomenon than our individual selves.”
