ImageEs'kia Mphahlele is one of the most prolific authors on themes of education, literature, culture and social commentary in South Africa and Africa the continent. From an early childhood in the Native Location of Marabastad in Pretoria; to a herdboy in the then Northern Transvaal; to a High School teacher banished to exile because he defied the introduction of Bantu Education in 1952; Es'kia has come a long way. He has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards that have sought to pay tribute to the efforts of this tireless scholar.

In 1969 he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature and in 1984 he was awarded the Les Palmes Academiques by the French Government for his contribution to French Language and Culture. In 1998 former President Nelson Mandela awarded him the Order of the Southern Cross, the highest recognition granted by the South African Government. In the year 2000 he was acknowledged as: Writer Of The Century by Tribute Magazine. In 2001, the University Of Venda for Science and Technology opened the Es'kia Mphahlele Centre for African Studies.

Professor Mphahlele has honorary degrees from Rhodes University, The Universities of Natal, South Africa, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, among others. Mphahlele retired in 1987 as Professor and Head of the Division of African Literature in the Department of Comparative and African Literature, University of the Witwatersrand.
